1Sambayan to reveal line-up of candidates in the 2022 polls in September

MANILA, Philippines — Opposition group 1Sambayan hinted at revealing its line-up of candidates for the 2022 National Elections in September.

According to Retired Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, they are now in the process of completing the names to be included in their line-up of candidates.

“We are very inclusive, that’s why up to now we’re trying to form a bigger coalition,” Carpio said.

The former magistrate said 1Sambayan Coalition is strengthening its group by entering into an alliance with other organizations to match the ruling party of President Rodrigo Duterte.

The group initially invited Vice President Leni Robredo to run as president on their side.

Likewise, they asked other popular names like former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Atty. Chel Diokno, Senator Grace Poe, Congresswoman Vilma Santos-Recto, and Congressman Eddie Villanueva.

Poe, Diokno, and Recto already turned down the offer.

Yet, the 1Sambayan Coalition believes there is a chance for the opposition to stand out and defeat the administration lineup.

Carpio said among those whom they invited in the coalition was Senator Ping Lacson, who already announced his bid for the 2022 national elections, though he declined their invitation.

As a prior assessment of what to expect in next year’s polls, the group said Lacson will definitely divide the administration’s expected votes.

“Sa tingin po natin, with the solid opposition, mahahati lang po nila ang boto ng administrasyon,” noted Howard Calleja, the group’s convenor. MNP (with reports from Rey Pelayo)

Comelec to test run internet voting abroad on Sept. 11

Aileen Cerrudo   •   September 8, 2021

MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will begin to test run internet voting abroad from September 11 to 13.

Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon, commissioner-in-charge for overseas voting, believes that the online voting can be used as a new platform for Filipinos abroad.

She said the system would be more convenient for overseas voters particularly seafarers and those who cannot take time off work in order to vote.

If the dry run is successful, the Comelec official said she would ask Congress to pass a law that allows the use of a mobile app for voting.

“If these test runs efficient, effective and cost-efficient, I will recommend to the commission en banc that we request Congress—of course the House and the Senate—to consider passing a law to use mobile app voting in the future. Well, if we’re looking at 2025 that’s quite possible ‘cause that’s another three years from now,” she said.

However, she said there are still things to consider with regards to the use of internet voting.

“There are three things that are major considerations for me as a decision maker: one is security; two is access of voters; three is the cost.  If we are satisfied, we can recommend to the Comelec en banc and of course Congress,” Guanzon said.  AAC (with reports from Dante Amento)

Lacson, Sotto officially launch tandem for presidential, VP posts

Maris Federez   •   September 8, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Panfilo Lacson and Senate President Vicente Sotto III, on Wednesday, officially launched their tandem on their bid for the presidential and vice-presidential posts in the 2022 National Elections.

The pre-taped campaign launch was attended by few family members, friends, former co-workers, and supporters who were tested for the coronavirus before the event. Other supporters joined the tandem via teleconference and taped testimonies.

Sotto took the stage first to signify his intention to be the country’s second in command.

“Ang inyo pong lingkod ay naririto para harapin ang hamon sa tamang panahon na maging kandidato ninyo sa pagka-pangalawang pangulo ng Republika ng Pilipinas,” Sotto said.

After raising national issues, such as poor economy, rising COVID-19 cases, corruption, and poverty, Sotto said the Filipinos have had enough.

“Tama na! Kailangan na nating tumugon! Kailangan na nating umaksyon! Kailangan na natin magsanib pwersa upang mapigilan at maitama ang mali. Ito na ang simula,” he said.

In his own speech, Lacson mentioned how President Rodrigo Duterte admitted in his final State of the Nation Address “that he was wrong to think that leading the country is simple and easy as leading Davao City.”

“Walang debate sa katotohanan. Hindi natin dapat payagan ang maling akala para sa kinabukasan ng ating bansa,” Lacson said.

Lacson stressed that the challenges that await the next administration are no joking matter and that they should be addressed with honest, dedicated, and competent public service.

“Mayroon kaming sapat na kakayahan, katapatan, at katapangan upang pamunuan ang ating bansa at upang muling bumangon sa ating pagkakalugmok,” he said.

Lacson and Sotto said they are gunning for “leadership by example.”

“Hindi sa salita kundi sa gawa. No leader can succeed if he cannot practice what he preaches,” Lacson said.

Lacson said they are in the process of crafting their platform of government that they want to present to the people.

“As we speak, we are in the process of drawing up a roadmap or a master plan that will serve as our platform of government that we intend to present to our people. After all, sa takdang panahon, kayo ang magdedesisyon kung karapat-dapat ba kaming pagkatiwalaan na mamuno sa ating bayan,” he said. —/mbmf

Go declines PDP-Laban nomination for 2022 presidency

Maris Federez   •   September 8, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — Senator Christopher ‘Bong’ Go has declined his nomination as Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan’s (PDP-Laban) bet for the presidency in the 2022 National Elections.

Go, who did not attend the convention, released a statement Wednesday afternoon, expressing his gratitude for being nominated along with the President. He, however, reiterated that he is not interested to run for president.

He stressed that he’d rather focus his attention on public service in his capacity as a member of the Upper Chamber and implored his party mates to respect his decision.

“I have already respectfully declined your endorsement through a letter I sent last week. I am hoping that the party will continue to respect my decision,” he stated.

Go, nevertheless, expressed his continued support to the party.

“Gayunpaman, asahan ninyo ang aking buong suporta sa ating partido. Kahit hindi ako tumakbong Pangulo, patuloy pa rin naman akong magmamalasakit at magseserbisyo sa sambayanang Pilipino upang malampasan ang krisis na ating hinaharap at maipagpatuloy ang mga magagandang nagawa ni Pangulong Duterte,” he said. —/mbmf
