MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have opened three more median stops along the EDSA Busway.

This was announced on Sunday (September 6) by MMDA EDSA Traffic and Transport Zone Head Edison Nebrija.

He said the DOTr and the MMDA started operating the new bus stops on Saturday.

These were the North Avenue, Quezon Avenue Station, and the one in front of Q-mart – all in Quezon City.

He added that footbridges were also constructed in the concerned areas,

“Sa tulong ng MMDA, 15 median bus stops na ang naitayo, at ang mga ito ay sunod-sunod na bubuksan oras na makumpleto ang iba pang safety and infrastructure requirements gaya ng barriers, lifters, at electricity,” the DOTr said in an earlier statement on Friday.

“Long-term plan ng DOTr na gawing 29 ang kabuuang bilang ng mga median bus stop sa EDSA,” it added.

The three bus stops were in addition to the four that were earlier opened in Guadalupe, Ortigas, Santolan, and on Main Avenue. —/mbmf

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has suspended the inauguration of the LRT-2 East Extension Project from its original schedule on April 26 and set it to a much later date of June 23, 2021.

In a statement, the department said the adjustment is due to the new COVID-19 restrictions and to protect the health and safety of rail workers and the riding public.

DOTr Undersecretary for Railways TJ Batan also reported that foreign rail experts who are necessary for the final stages of installation, testing, and commissioning works for the project have been unable to report for work or enter the Philippines due to stringent restrictions being enforced.

“As much as we would like to open the project earlier, kailangan pong unahin ang kalusugan at kapakanan ng ating mga rail workers at mananakay (we need to prioritize the health and well-being of our rail workers and passengers),he said.

LRT-2’s new stations, the Marikina Station and Antipolo Station will serve commuters from Recto, Manila going to Masinag, Antipolo, and back.

According to the DOTr, “the project is expected to cut travel time between Manila and Antipolo from the previous three (3) hours by bus or jeepney, to only 40 minutes.” AAC

MMDA staff with comorbidities, elderly get COVID-19 vaccine

Robie de Guzman   •   April 14, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Wednesday began the vaccination against novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) of its personnel who are senior citizens and with comorbidities.

MMDA chairperson Benhur Abalos said around 200 employees belonging to the A2 (senior citizens) and A3 (with comorbidities) priority groups were administered with Sinovac Biotech’s CoronaVac vaccine at the agency’s headquarters in Makati City.

Around 80 medical personnel of the MMDA were already vaccinated against COVID-19 on Monday.

Abalos said the MMDA has a high infection rate among its personnel because they are among the frontline workers in the fight against COVID-19.

“Kaya, humingi kami ng tulong sa DOH (Department of Health) para mabakunahan ang ating mga frontliners, lalong lalo na ang aming traffic enforcers, ang mga nasa field,” he said.

The agency is targeting to fully inoculate all its 8,000 employees.

Abalos himself received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. His initial dose was given last March 1.

The MMDA has so far recorded a total of 771 COVID-19 infections with 100 active ones. About eight personnel succumbed to the disease. – RRD (with details from Correspondent JP Nuñez)
