For the third time, AFP Cavaliers scored another shot at bringing home the championship trophy from the league of public servants, UNTV Cup.
The men in uniform blew NHA Builders’ chances of qualifying as they swept the best of three semifinals series after an overwhelming victory in Game 2, 86-78, last Sunday (February 10) at the Pasig City Sports Center.
Darwin Cordero with 30 points and Wilfred Casulla with 17 points, were hailed as the Best Players of the Game.
“Hard work, pinaghirapan talaga ng team ito. We really focused on winning this semi-finals. We really practiced hard, marami kaming preparation. We are happy nagawa namin lahat,” AFP Cavaliers Head Coach Corporal Cornelio “Sonny” Manucat III said.
(Hard work. We really worked hard for this. We really focused on winning this semi-finals. We really practiced hard, we had a lot of preparation. We are happy that we were able to do all of it.)
AFP also revealed that they had a hard time with NHA’s transition offense, but they were able to adjust.
Although the NHA dominated the rebounding department, they were shooting bricks from the outside. Out of their 14 attempts from the three point territory, they only made 3 shots while the AFP had 12 out of 30.
The AFP’s 11 steals and NHA’s 19 turnovers were also crucial to the result of the game.
“Nawala sa composure yung mga player ko, medyo napagod eh. Inabot pa kami ng sobrang malas sa three points, di maka-shoot, naaagawan. All in all nawala yung composure namin… ang dami naming error,” NHA Coach Benett Palad said.
(We lost our composure, we got tired. We were not connecting our shots and we lost a lot of possession. All-in-all, we lost our composure and we made a lot of errors.)
The Senate Defenders capitalized on their defense to be able to keep their chance at securing the UNTV Cup Season 6 champion title this season.
“We played interior defense. Yung mga penetration nila nachi-check namin (We were able to neutralize their penetration attempts). And then, we cannot stop Omiping. What we can do is contain him. So, I think we were able to contain him and the rest ng mga players nila (of their players). Hindi naman namin na pa-contribute (We stopped them from contributing). We got lucky in the end,” Senate Head Coach Mike Fermin said.
Best Players of the Game Reynaldo Malaga Jr had 30 points while James Ryan Mangaran contributed 17 points.
Due to Senate’s tough defense, two-time MVP and PNP’s main gunner, Ollan “The Sniper” Omiping was only able to score 12 points.
“Yung pinaka-lapses namin ang baba ng fieldgoals namin especially, sa labas… kailangan naming i-improve namin ang shooting sa labas. And the same thing, kailangan namin i-improve ang depensa namin,” PNP’s playing coach Harold Sta. Cruz said.
(Our main lapse was our field goals, it’s so low; especially our outside shooting. The same thing with our defense, we need to improve that.)

Despite finishing third at the UNTV Cup Season 7, the National Housing Authority (NHA) basketball team, NHA Builders, still enjoyed the opportunity to donate P1,000,000 to their chosen beneficiary: the NHA Provident Fund.
Since joining the League of Public Servants in 2014, the NHA Builders have been providing for their chosen charity.
The NHA Provident Fund was created in 1981 by the first general manager of NHA, Retired Major General Gaudencio Tobias. It was established as a way of providing support to the employees of the agency through loans and extending assistance to dependents of employees who passed away.
“It’s a big help to the members and to the members’ dependents. Malaking tulongtalagaito[It’s really a big help]. It became an additional working capital to our welfare fund because many of our employees are getting older,” NHA Provident Fund Chairperson Wilma Hernandez said.
“For Kuya Daniel and Bro. Eli, thank you very much. This tournament helps a lot to our provident fund and of course to our players. I wish that you will continue with this tournament. It is a worthy endeavor. We are looking forward to a continuing relationship with your team and our team also. Thank you very much,” Chairperson Wilma Hernandez added.
The players and coach were happy with what they achieved this season and promised to do better in the next season.
“Regardless samga challenges napinagdaanan, maswerte kami pumasok kami sa Final 4. Pero yungmapanalunannaminyung 3rd place, this is one-step higher sana-achieve namin last season (Regardless of the challenges we faced, we were lucky to be part of the Final 4 teams this season. But to win the 3rd place, this is one step higher from what we have achieved last season),” NHA Builders’ Chief-of-Staff Atty. John Christopher Mahamud said.
“Nakakatuwa dahilmado–doblenaminyungmaibibigaynaminsa beneficiary namin — from P500,000 last season to P1,000,000 this season— sa Provident Fund (I feel happy because we will be able to double our grant to the NHA Provident Fund; from P500,000 last season to P1,000,000 this season), NHA Builders shooting guard Alvin Vitug said.
“We are one step higher ngayon di ba? Next year, season 8 gusto nanaminlumabansa championship. Hindi nanaminpapakawalanito(We are one step higher. Next year, season 8, we want to battle for the championship title. We will not miss the chance),” NHA Head Coach Silverio “Benett” Palad. — UNTV Cup Staff

Even though PNP Responders just finished 4th place in the seventh season of the league of public servants, they were still entitled to donate P500,000 to their chosen beneficiary.
The cash prize was awarded on March 11, 2019 during the UNTV Cup Season 7 Finals Game 2 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
PARDSS Foundation International has been PNP’s chosen beneficiary for 2 season’s now and in an off-season edition in 2018.
The Peace Action and Rescue with Dedication to Serve the Society (PARDSS) is a SEC-registered non-governmental organization with a mission to assist the PNP and other local government units in promoting peace, unity, public safety and development in the country.
The organization has almost 300 chapters in the Philippines and abroad conducting activities such as feeding programs, relief and rescue operations in times of calamities and disaster, assisting some communities of indigenous people, providing school supplies and shoes for destitute students and organizing medical and dental missions to name a few.
Arcie Fabon, the founder and president of PARDSS Foundation, says that part of their advocacy is to be an anti-crime entity in the society, “Sa bawat chapter po namin ine-endorse po namin sa chief of police sa malapit na station sa kanilang lugar. So dahil po dito nagiging katuwang po ng kapulisan ang ating PARDSS Foundation members sa pag-monitor, gathering information. Dahil po doon, natutulungan po namin sila [PNP] sa kanilang kampanya kontra krimen, kontra droga.”
(We endorse our chapter members to the local PNP officials for us to be of help. We usually help the policemen in monitoring and gathering information which is vital to PNP’s campaign against crime and drugs.)
In the latest executive face off before UNTV Cup Season 7 began, PNP Responders were able to donate P1,000,000 to PARDSS Foundation as championship prize. Part of the prize went to the acquisition of a parcel of land in Taytay, Rizal where they plan to build their national headquarters. The remaining amount went to the purchase of some rescue equipments, medical supplies and as budget for their relief operation in Bataan and Albay.
“Sa amin pong PNP Responders, sa pangunguna ni Chief Police Chief Superintendent Rhodel Sermonia, ang director ng PNP-PCRG, maraming maraming salamat po sa ikatlong pagkakataon na kami ay maging inyong beneficiary,” PARDSS Foundation President Arcie Fabon expressed.
(To PNP Responders, led by PNP-PCRG Director Chief Police Chief Superintendent Rhodel Sermonia, thank you very much. For the third time you chose PARDSS as your beneficiary.)
“To Kuya Daniel and Bro. Eli Soriano, thank you for inspiring us to help others. Dahil po sa inyo, nagkaroon ng UNTV Cup charity basketball league. At dahil po sa inyo, maisasakatuparan ang pangarap ng aming samahan na mas makatulong pa sa ating mga kababayan,” Fabon added.
