Nagtahan Flyover in Manila partially closed for repair

Robie de Guzman   •   October 13, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — The Nagtahan Flyover in Manila will be partially closed for seven months as it undergoes rehabilitation, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

In an advisory, the MMDA said the flyover will be closed from October 2021 until April 2022 to undergo major repairs after cracks and defects were found on the bridge.

Trucks are prohibited from traversing the area, it added.

“Only one lane at a time shall be occupied and only light vehicles are allowed to pass on the flyover and the Nagtahan Service Road,” it said.

The MMDA said the bridge rehabilitation will be done in segments:

  • Segment 1 and 2: Northbound (R. Magsaysay to G. Tuazon) within two months
  • Segment 3: Southbound (G. Tuazon to R. Magsaysay Area) within 1.5 months
  • Segment 4 and 5: Northbound (EARIST to R. Magsaysay Blvd. area) within 2 months
  • Segment 6: Southbound (R. Magsaysay to EARIST area) within 1.5 months

The MMDA advised vehicles going north to take Osmeña Highway, right to Quirino Avenue, left to Quirino Ave. Ext., left to U.N Ave., right to Romualdez St., left to Ayala Blvd, and Roxas Blvd. to destination.

Meanwhile, vehicles going Southbound may take A. Bonifacio Ave., right to C3, R-10, to their destination, it added.

The MMDA said the rehabilitation of the bridge will address the big cracks at its abutment wall and railing, loose steel enclosure of retrofitting on its piers, and rusting steel enclosure of retrofitting at several piers.

The repair also seeks to avoid untoward incidents that the bridge might cause to motorists and other road users.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Monday confirmed that her planned trip to Singapore for personal health management set for Tuesday, October 5, is now canceled.

Mayor Sara said one of her staff who will accompany her on the trip has tested positive for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) following an RT-PCR test Monday morning.

[Our trip has been canceled because one of my companions is a COVID-19 positive. It’s not me. Singapore (authorities) will never let us in because one of the travelers is a COVID-19 positive based on our RT-PCR test this morning.]

The local chief executive, however, did not indicate whether she will re-schedule the said Singapore trip.

Mayor Sara said she has already filed a medical leave of absence for the said trip from October 5 to 8, which coincides with the period of the filing of certificates on candidacy for the 2022 national elections. —mbmf (with details from UNTV Correspondent Janice Ingente)
