Coal tycoon and self-made billionaire Christopher Cline, 61, was among the seven people who died in a helicopter crash on Thursday (July 4) in the Bahamas, the Register-Herald of West Virginia reported, citing friends of Cline.
Cline died the day before his 62nd birthday and was a native of Beckley, West Virginia.
Among those killed was also one of Cline’s daughters, the Register-Herald said, citing unnamed friends of Cline.
The helicopter went down shortly after takeoff in the Atlantic Ocean early on Thursday near Walker’s Cay, the northernmost island in the Bahamas, BNO News said, citing unspecified U.S. and Bahamian officials.
The helicopter was headed for Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, the Palm Beach post reported, citing Bahamian Air Accident Investigation Department’s chief investigator, Delvin Major.
Forbes listed Cline number 1,281 on its billionaires’ list with an estimated net worth of $1.8 billion, listing him as self-made.
Cline took coal mining firm Foresight Energy public in 2014 and sold a controlling stake in 2015 for $1.4 billion cash. (REUTERS)
The pilot of a helicopter that crashed in foothills near Los Angeles, killing basketball great Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and all seven others on board, likely became disoriented in the fog, federal investigators said on Wednesday (June 17).
The National Transportation Safety Board report said pilot Ara Zobayan told air traffic controllers that his helicopter was climbing, when in fact it was descending shortly before slamming into a hillside outside the community of Calabasas on Jan. 26.
The NTSB said that pilots can become confused over an aircraft’s attitude and acceleration when they cannot see the sky or landscape around them, causing “spacial disorientation.”
“Without outside references or attention to the helicopter’s attitude display, the actual pitch and bank angles have the potential to be misperceived,” the NTSB said.
The findings came in a “public docket” released by the NTSB as it investigates the crash. The agency has not yet released its final report. (Reuters)
MANILA, Philippines – Former PNP Directorate for Intelligence Major General Mariel Magaway finally returned home after months of being confined at the Asian Hospital since he figured in a helicopter crash in March.
This was confirmed by Deputy Chief for Administration Police Lt. Gen. Camilo Cascolan who was there when Magaway was discharged on Thursday (May 21).
Cascolan said Magaway is in good shape and his memory remains sharp though he needs to go through physical therapy to improve his mobility.
“Two weeks to one month therapy kayang-kaya na niya yun,” he said.
“Inaalalayan lang siya syempre kasi ikaw ba naman na more than two months [sa ospital] tapos masakit likod mo, may mga bali pa sa buto pero ok siya, ” he added.
General Magaway was among the eight passengers of the ill-fated Bell 429 that crashed at the PNP impounding area in San Pedro, Laguna minutes after taking off.
Other passengers in the flight were PNP Chief PGen. Archie Gamboa and his aide, PNP Spokesperson PBGen. Bernard Banac, two pilots and former Directorate for Comptrollership PMGen. Jovic Ramos who is still recovering in a hospital. MNP (with inputs from Lea Ylagan)
MANILA, Philippines – Scammers are increasingly active these days especially with everyone practically living in cyberspace due to lockdowns in different parts of the world.
In the Philippines, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has warned the public of the rise in cybercrime as the national government’s enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) limits movement outside of residence.
With almost all services migrating online, scammers are taking advantage of online platforms to pursue their schemes.
Such is the problem of Jodel Merjudio who operates an online travel agency.
Merjudio reported to UNTV’s Serbisyong Bayanihan that some scammers created an impostor account of his enterprise’s Facebook page.
It only came to his knowledge when one of his clients told him about an alleged representative of his travel agency who transacted and asked money from that client on his behalf.
Part of the scammer’s modus operandi is to block the clueless victims from its fake page once payment is received.
The victims are then led to Merjudio’s official page to follow up on transactions that the latter had no knowledge of.
“Ang nangyayari, iyong kliyente pag nag-search sila sa Facebook, dalawa ang lalabas na agency. So kami ang nako-contact nila kasi naka-block na sila doon sa scammer page,” Merjudio said.
Jodel said he initially reported the incident to the Philippine National Police (PNP) Region 4A Cybercrime Division.
To assist Jodel, Kuya Daniel Razon contacted Atty.Victor Lorenzo of the NBI’s Cybercrime Division who agreed with Jodel’s initial move of reporting the incident to proper authorities.
The official promised to help Jodel in identifying the perpetrators behind the impostor account and to eventually resolve the case.
“Kunin nila ang mga contact details [ng kliyente] at kung makipag-ugnayan sila sa amin ay iyon kasi ang hihingiin namin (Get the contact details [of the client] so when you come to us, those are the details that we would be asking],” Lorenzo said.
“Kokontakin namin sila para malaman kung ano ba ang mode of payment? Paano ang money ay transmitted? Bank to bank? Kasi ang best lead natin kung sino ang nag-create ng fake account ng travel agency (We will ask them what the mode of payment was; how the money was transmitted; and was it bank to bank? Our best lead would be the creator of the travel agency’s fake account),” he added.
Atty. Lorenzo said incidents of online travel agency scams have already dwindled for some time but since the country is under lockdown, scammers have again started to become active online. —MNP (with details from Rey Pelayo)
