Duterte says country should address rapid population growth

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte said the country must address the rapid population growth.

During his speech during the inauguration of rehabilitation projects at the Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport on Thursday (March 11), Duterte said overpopulation is hampering the country’s ability to develop and tackle current and future challenges. Overcrowding is also a challenge for the national government to address the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country.

“It’s because there are so many Filipinos that are crammed in the urban areas. Only a few are living outside,” he said.

“We can match the family planning programs of government at least with our GDP (gross domestic product),” he added.

The President also lamented the government’s inability to implement an effective family planning program resulted in rapid population growth.

Duterte said he is passionate about implementing a family planning program. However, his measures resulted in a clash with the church. With this, the President said it is up to future public officials to resolve the overpopulation issue.

“Ayaw ng simbahan (The church is opposed to it). Kaya collision course talaga and one word led to another. Sabi ko (I said) if you cannot honor the separation of state and church, then we will not be able to really understand each other,” he said.

With the country’s current population of 110 million, President Duterte hopes that his successors will take a closer look at the population issue and do something about it.

“Sabagay wala na ako (My term is almost over). I will be freed of that worry. But you know, we’d pass it on to the generation, sobra talaga. It’s high time that we review,” he said.
