German astronauts Thomas Reiter and Alexander Gerst on Thursday (March 26) gave the public advice for getting through a period of confinement, much like their time spent in space.
They appeared via a live stream put on by the European Space Agency (ESA), offering the public well wishes and tips such as maintaining a work-life balance and video conferencing with loved ones who may be missed.
“On board the International Space Station, we had the opportunity for our family to see us every weekend on Skype, just like how we’re doing now,” Reiter said.
“We had a very tight daily routine, and I think it’s important to follow a conscious routine in such a situation. Not just living day to day, but keeping a conscious sequence to pull through the day, and keeping that routine all week,” he added.
“We also worked in the same place where we ate, and we had to structure and create an artificial boundary. What we had every morning and night was a conference with the landing station, in the morning at 7:30 and at night at 7:00 pm. We said, everything in between is work time and everything after is free time. You have to keep to that,” Gerst said.
Gerst was the $100 billion International Space Station’s first German commander during his six-month mission in 2018, He also spent 165 days on the ISS in 2014.
Meanwhile, Thomas Reiter is a retired astronaut who now works as an adviser to ESA. He completed an ISS mission in 2006. (Reuters)
