Mayor Isko discourages public from visiting Manila Bay Sands area amid pandemic

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso on Monday called on the public to refrain from visiting the Manila Bay Sands area amid the continuing threat of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Domagoso made the appeal after incidents of overcrowding during the opening of the Manila Bay Sands over the weekend.

A number of people who wanted to get a peek of the beach during its opening failed to observe physical distancing and many were seen not wearing face mask and face shield.

While understanding the excitement of the people for the project, Domagoso said the public should keep in mind that the threat of COVID-19 is still present.

Moreno said that since the project has yet to be completed, the area will be closed to the public.

He also asked the city police to ramp up the security in the Manila Bay Sands and to stop people from staying or taking photos and videos of the area.

According to Manila Police Station 5 officer-in-charge Lt. Col. Alex Daniel, they have barricaded the entry points and posted at least 20 policemen to guard the area 24/7.

Ermita Police station commander Police Lt. Col. Ariel Caramoan has been relieved from his post following the local police’s failure to maintain social distancing measures during the event.

Kabayan Noli de Castro withdraws senatorial bid for 2022

Maris Federez   •   October 13, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — Veteran journalist Noli de Castro on Wednesday announced that he is withdrawing his senatorial bid for the 2022 national and local elections.

De Castro’s latest decision comes less than a week after announcing his candidacy.

“Nitong mga nakaraang araw, taimtim kong pinag-isipan ang desisyong pagbalik bilang isang mambabatas,” Kabayan Noli said in his statement.

De Castro said, that despite his decision to withdraw, his dream and aspiration for the country are still intact.

He said he can still be of help to the people in giving them a voice by remaining to be a broadcast practitioner.

Meanwhile, Mayor Isko Moreno, whom De Castro thanked for his support, said he respects the former vice president’s decision.

“In truth, when my team was convincing him to run once more for the Senate, he contemplated on it for a long time. We respect his decision to forego his re-entry into national politics, and wish him well because we know that he will continue to have the best interests of our people, as the Pambansang Kabayan, in his heart,” Moreno said.

Aksyon Demokratiko chairperson, Ernest Ramel, added that De Castro will continue to be a member of Aksyon Demokratiko.

“We will continue to consult with him having vast experience in public service and his dedication to the welfare of the Filipinos. We are saddened by his decision but we wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” he said. —/mbmf
