Meralco to hike rates this March

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) announced on Thursday that power rates in March will increase by more than P0.08 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

This means an increase of P18 in the monthly electricity bills for households consuming 200 kWh a month, P27 for those consuming 300 kWh per month while households using 500 kWh can expect their electricity bill this month to jump by P45.

Meralco said this is mainly due to high prices in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) resulting from recent low power reserves in Luzon Grid and maintenance shutdown implemented by several power plants.

Meralco Spokesperson and Corporate Communications Manager Joe Zaldarriaga said power rates usually increase during dry season due to high demand.

“The next four months, March, April, May and probably middle part of June, makikita na po ninyo, sisipa na ‘yung konsumo. With that, you can expect electricity bills to go up as well mas marami kang ginagamit na kuryente,” Zaldarriaga said.

“As demand increases and supply right now is a bit of a challenge because of the series of yellow alerts, then definitely there will be pressure for prices to go higher,” Zaldarriaga added.

Meralco estimates that the power demand in the country will further increase in the month of May due to the effects of El Niño phenomenon.

The utility firm, however, assured it will prepare accordingly to prevent any power disruption on the day of Midterm elections.

“We are all planning na huwag tayong magkaroon ng any adverse events, pero we are also prepared for any possibility to ensure na hindi ma-disrupt ang elections,” Meralco Utility Economics head, Larry Fernandez said. – Robie de Guzman (with details from Joan Nano)

Robie de Guzman   •   May 7, 2021

MANILA, Philippines — The power rate in April will slightly increase, according to an advisory of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco).

Meralco announced that a household consuming 200 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in a month will have a P17 increase in their total bill; households consuming 300 kWh per month will have a P26 increase.

For households consuming 400 kWh and 500 kWh will have an increase of P35 and P44 in their total bills, respectively.

The electric company said the power rate hike is due to a higher generation cost in the spot market. AAC (with reports from Joan Nano)

Meralco, may bawas-singil ngayong Marso

“It represents the difference between yung actual na Weighted Average Tariff at saka yung ERC-approved Interim Average Rate namin. So, mayroon kaming nakitang difference in terms of the amount which is at, sa aming estimates, is at 13.9 billion,” ang pahayag ni Joe Zaldarriaga, tagapagsalita ng Meralco.
