The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the House Committee on Transportation are reviewing the reopening of two U-turn slots on EDSA.
The agency said they have received numerous complaints due to the severe traffic being experienced by motorists along EDSA from Quezon Avenue to Balintawak following the closure of U-turn slots in Metro Manila’s major thoroughfare to give way to the EDSA Busway.
MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said they already discussed with the House Committee on Transportation about reopening two U-turn slots.
“May plano po tayo na magbalik ng dalawang U-turn slots maybe dito sa may North Avenue and Congressional pero may infrastructure po tayo na gagawin diyan para hindi maabala flow ng traffic (We have plans to reopen two U-turn slots along North Avenue and Congressional but we will install an infrastructure there so as not to disrupt the flow of traffic),” he said.
The MMDA reported there are 200,000 – 300,000 vehicles plying EDSA every day.
The agency will also implement a Stop and Go scheme for vehicles plying A. Bonifacio and North Luzon Expressway (NLEX). -AAC (with reports from Joan Nano)

MANILA, Philippines—A bank teller was injured after an SUV rammed into a bank in EDSA, Muñoz on Wednesday, March 17.
The car was initially parked in the area while its owner, Dr. Esther Peralta, was with withdrawing money from an ATM at around 7:00 a.m.
When Peralta returned and started the vehicle, it made a loud noise prompting her to change the gear to parking mode.
However, this did not stop the car from suddenly accelerating and eventually crashing into the bank.
Security guard, Anthony Capalac who witnessed the incident said, “Umuugong po yung makina tapos sobrang usok sa likod, tapos bigla po siyang umabante dito na matulin papunta dun sa loob (The engine made a loud noise then emitted a thick smoke before speeding into the bank).”
Peralta said it was the first time such an incident with the car had happened.
“First time po yun, 2012 ko po nabili yung sasakyan diyan sa Tayuman. Siyempre ilalagay mo sa letter P [park] humarurot pa rin, tumatakbo, (This is the first that happened ever since I bought the car in Tayuman in 2012. I placed the gear on park but it still accelerated),” she said.
The bank’s façade was damaged, forcing management to announce temporary suspension of operations as it advised clients to visit other branches for their transactions.
Meanwhile, police authorities are investigating possible causes of the accident. It should be recalled that in 2015, similar incidents of unintended acceleration in some model of SUVs were reported. AAC (with reports from Dante Amento)
