MANILA, Philippines – Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar has ordered all police units to be on heightened alert for possible retaliatory attacks from communist rebels following the death of one of their alleged high-ranking officials, George “Ka Oris” Madlos.

Eleazar lauded the military’s effective internal security operations that led to the neutralization of Madlos, who was the commander and spokesman of the National Operations Command of the NPA, in an encounter in Impasugong, Bukidnon on Saturday, October 30.

“The PNP is one with our brothers in the Armed Forces of the Philippines in curbing the lawless activities and atrocities of the communist rebels that bring fear and terror to our communities. The entire PNP hails this successful operation as a big blow to the CPP/NPA/NDF,” Eleazar said in a statement.

“Kasabay nito, ipinag-utos ko sa ating kapulisan na mas maging alerto sa posibleng retaliatory attacks ng mga rebelde upang ipaghiganti ang pagkamatay ng isa sa kanilang matataas na pinuno. Tinitiyak ko sa publiko na hindi namin ito hahayaan. Patuloy ang pakikipagugnayan namin sa AFP upang siguruhin ang kaligtasan ng ating mga kababayan,” he added.

Initial reports said elements from the 403rd Infantry Brigade launched the operation after receiving information on the presence of rebels in Sitio Gabunan in Barangay Dumalaguing.

Allegedly, there were anti-personnel mines in the area, prompting soldiers to call for air support. State forces then engaged more or less 30 communist rebels in a firefight, which resulted in the death of Madlos and another rebel.

Despite differences in their beliefs on social issues, Eleazar has extended his condolences to the family of Madlos.

“Magkaiba man ang aming paniniwala tungkol sa pagtugon sa mga suliraning panlipunan ay personal kong ipinapaabot ang aking pakikiramay sa pamilya ni George Madlos o Ka Oris,” he said.

Eleazar said that Madlos’ death should serve as a warning to remaining communist rebels that the government would not stop in their operations against the CPP/NPA/NDF.

He also urged the remaining CPP-NPA-NDF leaders and members to surrender and avail of government programs so they could return to the mainstream of society and lead normal lives.

PNP nets over P90M worth of illegal drugs, nabs 36 suspects in series of ops

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday reported it has seized more than P90 million worth of illegal drugs in a series of operations this month.

In a statement, the PNP said the week-long simultaneous anti-criminality law enforcement operations (SACLEO) conducted from January 17 to January 23 also yielded the arrest of 36 top drug suspects.

These coordinated anti-drug operations comprised 14 buy-bust operations, 18 service of warrants of arrest, and two Marijuana Eradication operations in clandestine Cannabis farms in separate locations in different parts of the country, it added.

“We scored big anew in the campaign against illegal drugs. The arrest of drug personalities in various areas around the country is a reflection of our intensified strategies to eradicate the supply chain of this illicit activity,” PNP Chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said.

The PNP chief also lauded the efforts and intelligence gathering of the operatives involved in the operation, as well as the collaboration with their village counterparts to address the illegal drug concern in their community.

“They provided the police with material information so we can better track the movement of those who are engaged in this illegal business,” Carlos said while referring to an action program tagged as ‘Double Barrel Finale’.

The PNP said the double barrel finale focuses on drug trafficking and addiction in every barangay. It also seeks to help the community devise ways to avoid such vice and redirect the residents’ focus to more productive activities.

Carlos vowed to realize the program during his term as PNP chief.

PNP intensifies crackdown vs fake COVID-19 test kits, other medical supplies

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday said it will intensify its intelligence networking following the seizure of P150 million worth of fake COVID-19 antigen tests, face masks, and medicines used to treat COVID-19 symptoms in a warehouse in Manila.

In a statement, PNP chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said he has directed all police units to further monitor stores and warehouses in their areas of responsibility that are selling and stockpiling unregistered medical supplies.

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Monday reported it confiscated thousands of Clungene COVID-19 antigen test kits, counterfeit LianHua Chinese herbal medicines, and fake 3M N95 face masks during a raid in a warehouse in San Miguel last January 21.

Authorities also found intellectual property rights infringed goods such as apparel from brands like Nike, Fila, Converse, Adidas, as well as Louis Vuitton and Gucci bags, wallets, phone accessories, and others. A Chinese national, who allegedly owns the facility, was arrested during the operation.

“We want to know the extent of their operation given the large number of confiscated items,” Carlos said.

“If these products did not undergo government agencies regulation, then we aren’t sure if they are safe for use,” he added.

The PNP chief vowed to take a more aggressive step in curbing the proliferation of these products, with the guidance of the Department of Health.

“The PNP will wage a crackdown to curb the proliferation of these fake medical items,” Carlos said.

The public is advised to only buy medical items from accredited pharmacies and other related outlets.

Duterte urges NPAs to return to government fold before his term ends

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte reiterates his call on the members of the New People’s Army (NPA) to surrender and return to the fold of the government before his administration term ends.

“Magusurrender na kayo bago ako umalis sa trabaho ko,” Duterte said.

As the Armed Forces of the Philippines Commander in Chief, Duterte said he ordered the military, particularly the Philippine Army, to facilitate the surrender.

“This is my order to the military, if they want to surrender, give them the chance to surrender properly. If they surrender the firearms, the next trip down from the mountains you accompany them,” he said.

Duterte assured that surrenderers will be granted benefits for their return. He also stressed that fighting the government will not do them good.

“I can give you a house, bahay na parang appartment, marami akong maibigay. I’ll give you a house, I’ll give you a job, temporary may sweldo ka na,” the President said.

“Sinubukan naman natin na mga barilan, wala naman nangyari. Pinatay lang ang mga Pilipino,” he added.

The President further said that instead of disrupting government projects and activities, particularly after the onslaught of Typhoon Odette, NPA members must help in rebuilding heavily devastated areas.

By doing so, rebel returnees will receive compensation coming from the budget of the Office of the President.
