MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday said it will closely monitor cemeteries nationwide ahead of the observance of the Catholic community’s Undas.

In a statement, PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said he has directed police personnel to be prepared for the arrival of people in cemeteries, memorial parks, or columbaria during Undas on November 1 and 2.

Eleazar said they are expecting people to visit these areas before November to avoid crowds.

“Inaasahan natin ang maagang pagbisita ng ating mga kababayan sa kanilang mga pumanaw na mahal sa buhay. Inatasan ko ang ating kapulisan na maging alerto at siguraduhing nasusunod ang ating minimum health standards,” he said.

“Dapat matiyak na walang mangyayaring super spreader event sa mga sementeryo,” he added.

The PNP chief’s directive comes after the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases ordered for the closure of cemeteries from October 29 to November 2.

Eleazar also reminded the public to strictly abide by health and safety protocols to prevent further transmission of COVID-19.

A one-year old baby girl died after she was hit by a stray bullet while playing inside their house in Negros Occidental, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

In a statement, the PNP said the victim was inside their house with her grandparents and other kin when she was hit by a stray bullet in the afternoon of December 5.

Police report stated that the baby’s family said they heard two gunshots followed by a loud sound from the galvanized iron corrugated wall. The next thing they saw, the baby was already lying on the floor with her head bleeding.

The baby was rushed to the hospital in Manapla town and transferred to another medical facility in Bacolod City. The victim died past 11 p.m. on December 6, 2021.

The PNP said Nomar Ayan Bero, 46, turned himself in to the authorities on December 7 after confessing that he was the one who fired the caliber .38 revolver in the area.

Bero is now under police custodial investigation following his surrender to authorities, it added.

“As we dig deeper into this, we would like to check on the documents of the suspects for carrying such firearm. Our investigators are already preparing all material and testimonial evidence to support the case,” PNP chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said.

“Bero will be charged accordingly, based on the appreciation of the prosecutor of the evidence presented by police investigators,” he added.

Carlos also directed Western Visayas PNP Regional Director, PBGEN Flynn Dongbo, to “closely monitor the progress of investigation to establish an airtight case leading to a successful prosecution.”

PNP personnel may work near home this holiday season – Carlos

Robie de Guzman   •   December 9, 2021

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel will be allowed to work near their homes this holiday season, police chief General Dionardo Carlos said.

In a statement, Carlos said he is giving police personnel the opportunity to be deployed near their residences to spend more time with the family.

“I am asking the Directorate for Personnel and Records Management to find a way for commissioned and non-commissioned officers to perform their duties away from their original assignments if needed,” Carlos said.

Under the scheme, police officers will be deployed to police stations which are nearest to their homes.

They can also serve as an augmentation force if there will be emergencies that will require their assistance.

The PNP chief noted that this work arrangement is not new since it was first implemented during the time of former PNP chief and now Senator Ronald Dela Rosa. The policy aims to boost the morale of police officers and put an end to the scene where children wait for their parents to come home during the holiday revelry.

“The policy of cancelled holiday vacation for police personnel will be sustained but at least they will have the opportunity to still spend Christmas with their families,” Carlos said.

PNP backs DOH’s recommendation to keep PH under COVID-19 Alert Level 2

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine National Police (PNP) has expressed support to the recommendation of the Department of Health (DOH) to keep the country under Alert Level 2 amid the declining cases of coronavirus infection.

In a statement, PNP chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said the existing alert status in the country should not be downgraded yet due to the looming threat of the newly discovered Omicron COVID-19 variant.

“The time isn’t ripe yet since it’s the holiday season and we have observed more people becoming complacent to go outdoors, disregarding health protocol, and unmindful of the risks,” he said.

He also believes that a shift to a more relaxed quarantine level will affect the compliance of the public to minimum health standards.

Carlos, however, said that the PNP will abide by decision that the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases on the implementation of COVID-19 alert levels system.

“The local government units are vested the authority to issue Executive Orders that police personnel are duty bound to enforce,” he said.

Metro Manila is under Alert Level 2 until December 15. Other areas in the country have also been placed under the same level.

The DOH earlier said that the IATF is still discussing whether or not to lower the alert level in the capital region.
