Sara Duterte won’t seek national post in 2022 polls

MANILA, Philippines – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday said she will not run for a national position in the 2022 elections.

Duterte-Carpio issued the statement after her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, formally accepted his party’s nomination for vice president.

“Yes, I am not running for a national position as we both agreed only one of us will run for a national position in 2022,” Mayor Sara told reporters in a message.

PDP-Laban faction led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi endorsed Duterte as the party’s vice president bet, and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go as president.

Go, however, declined the nomination as PDP-Laban’s presidential candidate, stressing that he is not interested.

When asked if her father’s political plans would affect her own, the younger Duterte replied with: “It does not affect any of my plans but as we both agreed only one from the family will run for a national position.”

The presidential daughter also said that her regional party, Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP), will not support the Go-Duterte tandem in next year’s polls. Sara’s party supported PDP-Laban candidates in the 2019 elections.

“No. I will not share my light this time,” she said.

Mayor Sara also reiterated that her relationship with her father remains the same.

“Our politics do not interfere with our familial relationship. Iba ang trabaho, iba ang pamilya. Walang personalan,” she said.

Mayor Sara is not a member of PDP-Laban or any national party, making her ineligible to become a substitute candidate to Go or her father. Under the law, substitutes must be a member of the same political party.

Sara Duterte-Carpio has consistently topped presidential election surveys.

Several political parties have also declared their support for the mayor should she decide to join the presidential race. – RRD (with details from Correspondent Rosalie Coz)

Duterte inaugurates Sariaya Bypass Road

Robie de Guzman   •   October 22, 2021

President Rodrigo Duterte has inaugurated the 7.42-kilometer long Sariaya Bypass Road in Quezon Province.

In a speech after unveiling the marker on the new road on Thursday, Duterte said the completion of the project affirms the administration’s “strong commitment to improve the quality of life of Filipinos by pursuing strategic infrastructure projects across the country thereby improving connectivity and mobility, creating jobs, and dispersing economic activity throughout the regions.”

“It will likewise spur the growth of industries and business opportunities in the area, thereby boosting the socio-economic development of Quezon Province and improve the lives of the people,” Duterte said.

“As we continue to overcome the current pandemic and carefully reopen our national and local economies, infrastructure development will play a vital role in our success,” he added.

The bypass road is seen to provide faster and safer travel for motorists and will also allow efficient transport of goods to and from the markets in Southern Luzon, the President said.

The road could also lessen the traffic volume along Daang Maharlika from Sariaya to Lucena City by 40 percent.

Stretching from the Manila South Road Daang Maharlika to the Quezon Eco-Tourism Road, the Sariaya Bypass Road is expected to cater to around 15,000 motorists and commuters daily going to the different provinces in the Southern Tagalog Region.

At the same time, it is seen to spur economic and social development through efficient transportation, improved road safety and enhanced business opportunities in Quezon Province.

The Sariaya Bypass Road is one of the flagship projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) under the administration’s Build, Build, Build Program.

Duterte urges public not to be choosy with COVID-19 vaccine brands

MANILA, Philippines—President Rodrigo Duterte urged the public anew not to be choosy with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine brands.

During his Talk to the People on Tuesday night (October 19), Duterte expressed optimism over developments in the country’s vaccine supply as the government moves to build herd immunity.

However, he reminded the public to remain vigilant by continuing to follow health protocols; get vaccinated and avoid being choosy with vaccine brands.

“Do you know, if these vaccines that we have been giving to the population are not really effective and right, marami nang patay ngayon (many people would’ve been dead by now),” he said.

The president reiterated that the national government is trying hard to fight against the pandemic, and expressed his gratitude to other nations that provided aid to the Philippines.

“We’ve been trying hard, really hard to fight. [This] COVID program nakatutok kami lahat dito (we are all focused on this). I’d like to thank everybody who have really contributed to what we are now seeing,” he said. AAC

PDP Laban’s ‘BaGo’ tandem received well by supporters

MANILA, Philippines—Partido Demoratiko Pilipino-Lakas Bayan (PDP-Laban) said the tandem of  presidential aspirant Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa with Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go as his vice president has been well received by supporters.

PDP-Laban Secretary General Melvin Matibag said the party is set to roll out the caravan this week for the two candidates dubbed as the “BaGo” tandem.

“We are ready for that, we are preparing for that. But let me state it again, we are already rolling the campaign of Bato-Go tandem. Sabi nga namin, “BaGo 2022’ para sa tuloy-tuloy na pagbabago (BaGo 2022 for change to continue),” he said.

Matibag added that it may look like a last-minute decision but Dela Rosa has been one of the choices as the standard-bearer of the ruling party since months ago, and his selection went through the proper process.

“He [Bato] is being received very well,” Matibag said.

“I admire the humility of Senator Bato na sinasabi niya, ‘Hindi naman talaga ako, mayroon talagang ibang pwede,’  and that is a good character of a next president of the republic,” he added. AAC
